How to Install a Cat Flap

A Simple Guide for Homeowners

Adding a cat flap to your home is one of the easiest ways to give your pets more freedom while keeping your daily routine hassle-free. Whether your cat loves a late-night wander or simply wants the choice to explore the garden, a cat flap makes life more convenient for both of you.

At Rydale Windows, we often receive questions from homeowners wondering whether they can install a cat flap in their existing doors or whether they need a new panel altogether. This guide walks you through the essentials – from choosing the right type of cat flap to understanding the safest way to install one.

Can a Cat Flap Be Installed in Any Door?

Cat flaps can be installed in:

If your existing glass panel doesn’t already have a hole, it cannot be cut once toughened – instead, a new double-glazed unit with the correct cut-out is required. This is something Rydale Windows can supply and install professionally.

Choosing the Right Cat Flap

There are several types of cat flaps depending on your needs and your pet’s habits:

Standard Manual Cat Flap

A simple flap that opens both ways. Great for low-cost convenience.

Lockable Cat Flap

Includes manual locks to control access (fully locked / in only / out only / open both ways).

Magnetic or Microchip Cat Flap

Allows only your cat to enter, preventing neighbourhood cats from sneaking in.
Microchip flaps are the most secure solution and great for multi-cat households.

Thermal or Energy-Efficient Cat Flaps

Designed to reduce heat loss – ideal for homeowners who prioritise insulation.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Install a Cat Flap in a uPVC Door

Installing a cat flap into a flat uPVC panel is relatively straightforward. However, always ensure your installation doesn’t weaken the door’s structure.

Here’s the general process:

1. Measure Your Cat

Measure from your cat’s belly to the floor. This ensures the cat flap is positioned at the right height for comfortable access.

2. Choose the Position

The cat flap is usually installed in the lower section of the uPVC panel. Avoid installing into decorative raised panels, as these are not structurally suitable.

3. Mark the Template

All cat flaps come with a cutting template.

Place it on the internal face of your door and mark around it with pencil.

4. Drill Pilot Holes

Drill small holes in each corner of the template outline.

These help guide the saw and ensure clean corners.

5. Cut Out the Opening

Using a jigsaw, carefully cut along the marked line.

Take your time – neat cuts ensure the flap fits securely.

6. Install the Cat Flap

Place the interior and exterior parts of the cat flap on either side of the door and screw them together through the door panel.

Ensure the flap opens smoothly without obstruction.

7. Seal the Edges

Apply silicone sealant around the edges to prevent drafts and moisture ingress.

Warning: Should You Install a Cat Flap Yourself?

Flat uPVC panels are usually the easiest option for homeowners. They can be cut with basic tools such as a drill and jigsaw. Take care to avoid decorative or reinforced sections.

Call a professional if:

  • The panel is decorative or insulated

  • You want guaranteed airtight and secure finishing

Installing a Cat Flap in a Glass Door or Patio Door

This must never be done by cutting your existing glass, as toughened units will shatter.

Instead:

  1. A survey is carried out.

  2. A brand-new sealed double-glazed unit is manufactured with the correct hole.

  3. Rydale Windows fits the replacement unit and installs the cat flap.

This ensures the glass remains safe, thermally efficient, and compliant with building standards.

Can a Cat Flap Be Installed in Composite Doors?

Yes, but composite doors contain multiple layers including insulation and GRP skins.

A professional installer should assess the door first to ensure structural integrity remains intact.

If the panel is unsuitable, we can supply a replacement solid uPVC panel designed specifically for cat flap installations.

Installing a Cat Flap in Timber or Aluminium Doors

Timber Doors:

Solid timber doors are generally suitable for cat flap installation. Ensure the wood is not hollow or decorative in the area where you want the flap. Timber doors may need additional sealing around the flap to prevent drafts and maintain insulation.

Aluminium Doors:

Aluminium doors often have a hollow frame or internal insulation layers. A cat flap can still be installed, but professional assessment is recommended to avoid compromising the door’s structure or thermal performance. Special flaps designed for aluminium frames may be required.

Should I Fit the Cat Flap Myself or Hire a Professional?

DIY installation is possible, but professional installation ensures:

  • No damage to your door

  • No loss of security

  • No compromise to insulation

  • A clean, sealed finish

  • Correct installation height and function

Rydale Windows can supply the replacement door panel or glass unit and install the cat flap safely for you.
